The West Yorkshire Liver Care ODN has been on the road to support health and wellbeing events, working with large employers and events in new locations in Calderdale to introduce our Community Liver Health Checks (CLHC) team to the public.
On 1 October 2024, the team visited Balfour Beattie, a large Construction Company with a site in Leeds. Their code of ethics says, “We are committed to supporting people to achieve their best,” so to boost this commitment they arranged for our CLHC team to visit their site in the city centre and offer their employees and contractors the opportunity have a fibroscan to assess their liver health. On the day 18 people were scanned and given health and wellbeing advise in relation to liver health.
Balfour Beattie is a leading international infrastructure group. With 26,000 employees across the UK, US and Hong Kong. They are the UK’s largest construction and infrastructure provider.
On 2 October, the Community Liver Health Checks team were in Todmorden in the Calderdale area at the Kindness Cafe. The event was facilitated by the staff at the Basement Project and Recovery Steps drug and alcohol services from Halifax, offering freedom from addiction.
Liver scans were offer to those utilising the service at the Kindness Cafe and coincided with support groups and client appointments. The Hepatitis C Trust peers John Fox and Grant Hutching supported the event offering testing for Hepatitis C. While the target audience was clients of the Basement Project, passing members of the public were also offered the opportunity to have a fibroscan, 12 people were scanned on the day.
On 4 October our Project Support Manager, Simon Taylor, attended an event to raise awareness of the Hepatitis C self-test portal and the Community Liver Health Checks project in Pontefract, at an event to support people’s careers and wellbeing.
It was great to catch up with staff from the Knottingley Community shop where we have already held several events, with other events upcoming on the 29 November. The event also gave Simon a fantastic opportunity to network with other services providing support in the community.
There was a lot of interest from members of the public attending, with several people directed to our website where they can find future events in their local area.
